Fringe Research: From Magazines (1)

So after the group AW15 Trend Project, we got immediately briefed on our next one. This time it’s a summative and an individual project. Yay! While I had good experiences with my previous groups, I’m kinda excited to create an individual piece of work. We have to design an illustrated report booklet on InDesign (within 16-24 pages) relating to one of our trend categories (from the AW15 trend project) and within that, we have to answer specific questions. Anyway, I’ll be posting my finished work and research process throughout on this blog but for now, I want to show magazine research (offline source).

FOOTWEAR -> BOOTS -> FRINGE

I chose FRINGE as my category working example. Some other categories I was previously considering: leather, suede, patent, snakeskin etc. but after our course leader suggested ‘fringe’ would be a really good idea, and showed me various examples of what I could do within that category, I settled on it and immediately started working.

As we had to start this project during Christmas break and we have the New York trip the first week back, I couldn’t bring my sketchbook along with gazillion magazines (no space to put in my NY luggage) so before I left my uni flat, I gathered all FRINGE inspirations and tear sheets. I only took photos of the pages on my phone so I can reference them while I’m at home but will be putting them inside my sketchbook when I’m back from NY.

I am also planning on going to London this week and visiting top designer stores with my friend (who’s studying Fashion at UCA Epsom) so keep a look out on that, I hope I’ll get more answers and inspiration about my category and also new ideas for the ‘new context idea’!

This is only the first part of a very long research process and so I decided to categorise the tear sheets. I will then individually search each designer/brand and see what else they offer, maybe they have another brand advert that contains ‘fringe’/tassels and obviously I will be getting high quality/resolution images to put in my InDesign illustrated. report.

Magazines:

Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Marie Claire, i-D, Hello! Fashion, Elle, Glamour

All magazines I had with me at uni are all less than a year old.
